Gateway to Erlangen's Burgberg
Erlangen
In a prominent location behind Erlangen University Hospital, there is a crossroads with a very special urban presence.
Our design mediates between the modern flat-roofed buildings and the listed old buildings and villas along Hindenburgstrasse. The roof profiles and dwarf houses of the directly neighbouring monuments are taken up in a contemporary way and interpreted in an abstract manner. The planned brick façade also reflects the style of the neighbouring buildings and contributes to a harmonious overall architectural appearance. The staggered steps at the rear form green roof terraces with integrated troughs for plants. Sustainable and effective roof gardens not only offer residents a view of the wooded castle hill, they also create a connection to the green side of the residential neighbourhood. The entrance area is consistently cut in and reinforces the effect of the high point at the corner directly at the junction. The height development is adapted to the neighbourhood through the gradation at the rear and the striking elevation towards the junction.
There was also praise for the current status from the architectural advisory board. It recognised the ‘clear and purposeful project development’. The intensive and sensitive dialogue with the location, which took place during the design process, was particularly praised.
The project was developed at Bermüller + Niemeyer Architekturwerkstatt, which has been part of planquadrat Elfers Geskes Krämer since 2025. Our authorised signatories Sophie Bermüller and Matthias Niemeyer continue to manage the Nuremberg office with their expertise, experience and commitment. They now also draw on planquadrat's wealth of experience and knowledge management, enabling them to adapt their team even more flexibly to the tasks set by their clients.
