Grüner Salon
Darmstadt
- Phases: 1 - 3
- Gross Floor Area: 85,000 m2
- Competition, 1st prize
- Building contractor: bauverein AG
An urban and sustainable district offering a high quality of life is to be built on the former site of Darmstadt's Messplatz, providing a holistic concept for climate, mobility and usage. The new urban district with an animated block perimeter development creates urban density which at the same time provides space for many non-underpinned open spaces. Taking centre stage is the "Grüne Salon“, that together with the bordering green facades and ground floor cafe, restaurant and retail space forms the district's communicative centre. It is one of a series of public spaces that are linked with the semi-public inner courtyards via passages in the construction.
The mobility concept provides for a low car traffic district with a central district car park and a well thought out concept for ground level bicycle stands and various cycle tracks. The new buildings offer space for a diverse housing mix, a day care centre for children and some commercial areas.
