NEW BUILDING OF A DAYCARE CENTRE FOR CHILDREN AS A MASSIVE WOOD CONSTRUCTION FOR FOUR CHILDREN'S GROUPS
The two-storey new building of the daycare centre for children St. Bruno is located at the edge of Cologne's Beethoven Park on a plot populated by an old stock of trees. It was built as a massive wood construction and comprises completely pollutant-free materials both externally and internally.
The building shell is designed as a compact structure with a light rendered facade. It shows two recesses on the street and garden side that is clad with a wood panelling. They lend the facade a natural liveliness and depth and form a pleasant contrast to the smooth, plastered facade surface.
On the garden side the roof is supported by three solid wood beams via the recess. The daycare centre for children is designed for four semi-open groups that - based on the Hamburg room concept - have various themed rooms such as building, role play and movement rooms as well as kids' restaurant and workshop at their disposal. An individual interior room concept has been designed for all rooms in agreement with the pedagogic management, that reacts to the needs of the children and offers them a diverse range of stimuli.
In the entire building largely untreated materials are used that thus make them remain perceptible for the children in their original form, both in haptic and sensory terms. Together with the room geometry, the interior room materials furthermore ensure very good acoustics. This interaction offers the children a warm and pleasant environment, benefitting their wellbeing.
